EN 1143-1 grade 0

EN 1143-1 classifies safes, ATM safes, strongroom doors and strongrooms by burglary resistance, from grade 0 up to grade XIII. The standard test for safes includes attacks with hand tools, electric tools and thermal tools (ECB-S). The higher the grade, the greater the resistance: the time taken and the tools used both count. In Germany grades 0 and I are the grades named for firearm storage (§ 13 AWaffV).

A gun safe is not a grade of its own

A gun safe uses the same grades as any safe: EN 14450 or EN 1143-1. What changes is the rule of the country you live in. We show the certificate grade and, below it, what the rule says, without promising that one cabinet is enough for you.

Germany: § 13 AWaffV

For containers acquired after 6 July 2017, permit firearms must be stored unloaded in an EN 1143-1 container. Grade 0 under 200 kg empty weight: unlimited long guns and up to 5 handguns, plus ammunition. Grade 0 at 200 kg or more: unlimited long guns and up to 10 handguns. Grade I or higher: unlimited long guns and handguns. Anchoring does not change the empty weight. Permit ammunition on its own may be kept in an unclassified sheet-steel container with a swing-bolt lock. VDMA 24992 levels A and B still count only for owners who were already using them before 6 July 2017.

Italy: “with every diligence”

Article 20 of law 110/1975 requires firearms to be kept “with every diligence”. The law names no mandatory EN grade, so we name none. A certified safe can help show diligence, but the judge assesses each case.

United Kingdom

A UK firearm certificate sets the storage condition for each holder. Ask the police force that issues it. This site names no British grade.
